Places to Learn: Community Theater

Unschooling Rules #36 lists fifteen models that are better for childhood learning than schools are. One, shown here, is community theater.

  1. I can certainly attest to this! My teenage daughter and son spend an inordinate amount of time involved in community theater. Can I coax my son into reading Shakespeare, Thomas Wolfe or even Mark Twain? Not so much. But when I consider all the scripts he memorizes by the above authors and more, I relax. Their social lives? Amazing. And all because of the theater. In working behind the scenes as well, helping out with tech during productions of younger groups, they feel needed. Teenagers need to feel needed! And so many areas of study are touched on. It's been wonderful for them.
